TRUMP LABELED AS A “RACIST, CONMAN AND A CHEAT”
The former personal lawyer of Donald Trump, Michael Cohen, labelled his former boss, the President of the United States, as a “racist, conman and a cheat”.
He referred to Trump as an enigma: his “bad far outweighs his good”. He mentioned he is ashamed and regretted following Trump “blindly” and worked as his “fixer” over the past years. This he indicated at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s much anticipated hearing two months after pleading guilty to lying to Congress about his own dealings with Trump.
Cohen, who once mentioned that he would take a bullet for the president claimed that his lying to Congress in 2017 about the pursuit of Moscow tower project in Russia; hush money payments to women in violation of campaign finance laws; and Trump’s knowing in advance that Wiki-leaks would release stolen emails from Hillary Clinton was motivated by Mr Trump.
The former lawyer of Trump claimed he was directed by the president to threaten his (Trump’s) alma mater with a lawsuit if his grades were released. He tendered in the letter he issued to the boards of Trump’s former school in that effect to the committee as an evidence to support his claims. He also provided copies of documents detailing Trump’s finances for several years, alleging that Trump inflated his assets to get better insurance rates and loans from banks.
In his over six hours’ testimony to the committee, Cohen directly attributed the criminal investigations that have loomed over the presidency to Donald Trump. He tendered in documents and offered the lawmakers roadmaps that could corroborate his claims and aid congressional probing and investigations into the president and his businesses.
In response to Cohen’s testimonies, Trump wrote on his Tweeter page that: “Michael Cohan was one of many lawyers who represented me (unfortunately). He had other clients also. He was just disbarred by the State Supreme Court for lying and fraud. He did bad things unrelated to trump. He is lying in order to reduce his prison time. Using Crooked’s lawyer!”
The congress comprising of both Republicans and Democrats agreed to the fact that the former personal lawyer of Trump threw dust into the eyes of the congress but vehemently disagreed whether Cohen’s allegations are trustworthy now.
The chairman of the committee, Elijah Cummings, D-Md., indicated after the hearing that the hearing was a ‘search for the truth’ and he found Cohen believable and thought the hearing shed new light on whether the president may have committed a crime.
It is believed that Cohen’s appearance before the committee was not an act of charity but an effort to redeem his decimated image.
Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison by a federal judge, William Pauley III, in New York on December 12, 2018 after pleading guilty to numerous crimes which include campaign finance violations, tax evasion and lying to congress among others. He will report to prison on March 6, 2019
